Wednesday Bridge to Future Satisfac... Star this Commitment

wrkinprogrss commits to:

waiting until at least 6:30pm to do any recreational reading or any non-Joy-Diet audiobook listening, today. I will not check *any* LJ pages until 6:30pm or later. Until that time, I will experiment with doing job work as my main priority. If I need a break, I can choose from house work, Qi Gong or other gentle exercise, tax work, journaling, Joy Diet note-taking, th h/w prep, brief cartooning, or possibly composing a note to T&N or E. I will allow myself to listen to music at any time, but if I use the mp3 player before 6:30pm, it will only be for Joy Diet note-taking.

To support myself in getting a full night's sleep, I will not listen to any audio or do any recreational reading after 10:32pm. My aim for that will be to be in bed with the lights out by 11:30pm.

Mostly audiobooks. I do listen to some music, but it doesn't kick me into "escape" mode the way that recreational reading does--I can be in escape mode reading stuff on the internet, or reading a printed book, or listening to an audiobook. I've been an audiobook convert for quite a while, so I have a tendency to turn on a book whenever I get up from my desk. (I mostly work from home, and I live alone.) I've recently discovered that it's harder for me to go back to working at my desk if I've been listening to something that's more interesting or enjoyable than work, even if it's only for a few minutes. Also harder to go to bed at a reasonable hour if I'm listening to audio in the late evening. Hence the experiments with limiting my audio listening so much.

I hadn't thought about a 0-100 scale, but I might have done something similar if asked, and seldom given myself 100, either.

Sounds like a success to me! Brava!
It's that good old "good enough" vs. "ideal/perfect" thing again, isn't it? If I'd designed StickK, I would probably have let people grade their success from 0-100... but then I doubt I would ever have given myself any 100s!
And I hear you on the sleep issue - but a bit curious why audio listening is a problem? Is that music or books or-? I'm a fairly recent convert to audiobooks and podcasts and now can't fathom how I survived without them!

Believe me, I know how that goes! I'm still not clear what makes the difference on when I'm willing to SET these kinds of goals for myself, but I'm (grateful? relieved? pleased?) when I can!

(By the way, I have been struggling with this for several years. Sigh. Getting a decent amount of sleep and cutting down on the audio listening does seem to help.)

Successfully avoided audio and recreational reading after 10:32pm, last night. Was in bed with the lights out by 11:55. Technically a success, for which I am giving myself credit, but spent significantly more of the evening than I expected doing recreational reading on the internet, so it doesn't feel as good as I would have liked.

Way to go! I'm *totally* impressed. This type of goal is way above my head for now; I'm still trying to insert small islands of productivity into the ocean of time-wasting/escapism. *grin*
